We recently published our plan to align with the European Union’s European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). To complement this plan, we prepared a guide to the EUDR’s basic guidelines:
What is the EUDR?
La EUDR is a European Union initiative to combat global deforestation and promote sustainable practices in the trade of products that contribute to deforestation and forest degradation..
EUDR objectives:
· Reduce global deforestation
· Promote sustainable practices
· Protect biodiversity
· Mitigate climate change
Who is affected by the EUDR?
The directive applies to a number of key products directly associated with deforestation, such as: cattle, cocoa, coffee, palm oil (fractions and palm kernel oil), soya, rubber and timber, as well as products derived from these such as leather.
Anyone who trades within the European Union in these products, either as a trader (this can be the importer or the European producer), who places the product on the market for the first time, or as a trader/manufacturer, who contributes to the distribution of the product within the EU.
What are the EUDR requirements?
It is an initiative that will be a challenge for many, as one of the minimum requirements is to comply with a due diligence (DD) where information on the traceability of the product must be provided.
Companies importing and marketing these products in the EU must:
· Prove that their products are not linked to deforestation; this involves implementing traceability systems and reporting on the sustainable origin of products.
· Comply with sustainability standards; adherence to practices that not only avoid deforestation, but also promote forest conservation.
Implementation of the EUDR:
From 30 December 2024, companies will be required to implement the new standards outlined in the EUDR. This includes acting diligently in supply chain management, reviewing sourcing practices and ensuring that products meet the sustainability criteria set out by the Regulation..
LIPSA and the EUDR:
Thanks to the proactive work and effort we have been carrying out for months, LIPSA is in a privileged position to successfully implement the EUDR.
We guarantee to all our customers that there is a solid DD process in place and that no deforestation is guaranteed in all the products that we market and that are affected by the Regulation.
Due to the above, all products affected by the EUDR will suffer an increase in cost/price from the date of entry into force.
